Coyote Point Stars & Stripes regatta 7-7-12
7-7-12
Today Dave K. was good enough to crew for me on the Coyote Point Stars & Stripes regatta. This was a very low key affair, much like a long beercan race with a rabbit start and using permanent marks (channel markers and the "Bird Cage" off SFO airport.
Light wind start on the flood and there was little relief even running deep into the shallows and bumping up against the SFO security zone. We held our own for a good bit, then as the wind picked up all the boats except a big cruising cat took off. It took forever to make it to the upwind mark against that flood. After the race, we looked at the GPS track and that looked really pretty good, we were just slow compared to the larger (36' plus) boats. Still we could still see some of them on the course as we rumbled down under spinnaker.
We did have our foul-ups, but we both remained calm and got things sorted without losing much ground. One was my rigging the spinnaker pole on the wrong side another was having both the jib and main halyard pop loose when a flying jib sheet flicked the rope clutches. There was also a bad overwrap on the port winch. Had to look at that for a minute before figuring how to clear it.
It was a beautiful day and we got to hang with some very friendly folks at the yacht club afterward. It is an afterthought, but we don't know we did on corrected time yet.
I post the video as proof... we are actually smiling and having a good time...
